Family Nature Discovery Day

WHAT: Cascades Raptor Center invites families to participate in an afternoon of Wildlife Hospital play where kids can be a wildlife rehabilitator for the day!

WHEN: Sunday, July 31st, 2011 12:00pm-4:00pm

WHERE: Cascades Raptor Center, 32275 Fox Hollow Road, Eugene

Participants will receive a report of an injured stuffed animal to be rescued on CRC’s wooded, hillside property. After rescuing their animal, kids can bring it to the wildlife hospital play area for treatment. While their patient recovers, families can visit with the nearly 60 permanent resident raptors at CRC. When the stuffed patients are ready for release, participants can take them back to the 'wild.' Start with the 12:00 handler talk, if interested, and then stay all afternoon - or come any time in between 12:00 and 4:00.

Activities are recommended for children between the ages of 4-11 and children must be accompanied by an adult. Cost of activities are general admission to CRC (CRC members receive free admission) and a $2 activity charge for participants. If you ride your bike or hike the Ridgeline Trial to CRC your activity fee will be waived! This Family Nature Discovery Day is sponsored by KVAL and Levi Strauss.

Save the last Sunday afternoon every month this summer for a CRC Family Nature Discovery Day. Our next day will be on August 8th and participants can learn “All About Owls.” Our final Family Nature Discovery Day of 2011 will be September 25th where participants can stop by the Migration Station. Hope to see you all!

We Won!

As many of you are aware (because I emailed you three times - I do apologize!), we were a finalist in Toyota's 100 Cars for Good facebook contest.  Originally, applications from up to 5000 organizations were accepted, from which 500 finalists were chosen.  Then, starting May 9th for 100 days, five organizations a day have competed or are competing for the car of their choice via supporter votes on facebook.  On day 74, Thursday, July 21st, with special thanks to our amazing volunteers for networking like crazy, and an overall wonderful and overwhelming response from facebook friends, volunteers, colleagues in the wildlife rehabilitation world, nest cam watchers, Kendall Toyota friends and fans, and THEIR networks of friends, family, and more - WE WON and will be receiving our new Toyota hybrid Highlander sometime in the next few months!  There were 11 finalists from Oregon, and we are the first from this state to have won.

It was an exhilarating, intense, and exhausting day - at the end of which we thought we'd won based on the percentage tally on the voting page, but it wasn't til mid-morning on Friday that the official results were uploaded to facebook. Toyota's generosity is very much appreciated!  Besides giving away 100 cars, all the runners-up receive $1000 each and all contestants received a video camera.

Given the turmoil in Japan from the earthquake and tsunami, it may take up to five months to receive the RaptorRig - but we've submitted our choices for colors and other options.  We will be WELL outfitted for rescues, errands, classroom visits, booth displays - and just building community awareness as we drive around town.  Our deeply sincere gratitude to everyone who voted, to everyone who forwarded a request to vote, to all those who supported us throughout this intense day - what a humbling experience to know that there is so much support out there for our birds and our work!

THANK YOU!  (Stay tuned - this photo of the car is just a mock-up and we'll be polling our facebook fans for input on the final bird photos and design for our 'wrap'!)

PS On August 12, the Audubon Society of Portland is also a contender for 100 Cars for Good - your vote for these colleagues would be much appreciated!  Portland Audubon connects people with nature and their power to protect it, operates the largest wildlife rehabilitation center in the state, does lots of conservation education, grassroots conservation activism, nest monitoring, and runs 450 acres of wildlife sanctuaries!

Benefit Dinner at King Estate

SAVE THE DATE!  We have tentatively reserved October 21st as the date of our first benefit dinner at King Estate.  Final details have yet to be worked out.  King Estate has partnered with us for the last few years on some raptor releases: our birds get a beautiful 1100 acre organic vineyard and orchard as a release site, and King Estate gets some added natural pest control.  Plan to come celebrate this partnership, help support our rehabilitation and education work, and have a delicious dinner with fine wines and the company of beautiful birds!  Hope to see you there.  Stay tuned for finalized details.
